First Impressions
The Navarro fits nicely into its included duffel bag. While we usually like backpack-style bags for easier transport, this one worked just fine.
The kayak comes with the usual pieces: a seat, footrest and fin. You'll need to buy paddles and a pump separately. What makes this one different is its mostly covered deck. You can even buy an extra skirt to make the cockpit more watertight (we didn't test this).
The kayak uses tough 600-denier ripstop polyester fabric and looks great with its X-shaped design. At 11 feet long, it's one of the bigger kayaks we reviewed. The extra length means more storage space, with zippered compartments at both ends.
Build quality is excellent and we really liked the firm drop-stitch floor.
Setup/Packdown
This is where the Navarro could improve.
There are four air valves, which sounds reasonable, but they're all different types. The sides use Boston valves, the floor has a Halkey-Roberts valve and the cockpit rim uses a twist-lock valve. This means you need to switch adapters while inflating (though you can blow up the cockpit rim by mouth if needed). We prefer that kayaks use the same valve types throughout.
Once inflated, things get easier. The seat and footrest attach with long Velcro strips, so you can adjust them exactly how you like. The fin snaps into place quickly.
Packing up takes more time because of the fabric covering; you'll need to let it dry completely before storing. This is a bit more hassle than other kayaks, but there are good reasons for this design choice.
Paddling Experience
The polyester covering makes this kayak great for cooler weather or when you want to stay dry. It handled choppy water well, keeping us protected from splashes. On our hot test day, though, we missed feeling the sun and water on our legs — this comes down to personal preference and weather conditions.
Comfort is excellent. The seat has thick, supportive padding and a high back. The footrest attaches directly to the floor, which isn't our favorite style (we prefer suspended footrests), but this was a minor issue. Storage space is fantastic, as we easily fit a picnic blanket, lunch, water, snacks and shoes for shore breaks.
Paddling took some getting used to with our arms above the cockpit rim. For its size, it didn't track as straight as we expected, possibly because of the short fin.
We appreciated the smart design touches: convenient carry handles near the seat, paddle straps to keep it secure and bungee cords for quick-access items like phones.
Final Verdict
The Navarro is perfect for cold weather and comfortable day trips. We wish setup and packing were simpler and a longer fin would help with tracking, but if you want a well-protected kayak, this is one of the best choices available.
