First Impressions
The Aqua Marina Memba 390 2P makes a strong first impression as a well-designed inflatable touring kayak for beginners and intermediate paddlers. Right out of the box, the AQUASHELL™ fabric and reinforced PVC side chambers give it a great feel compared to budget inflatables. The included package of two paddles, high-back seats, a double-action pump and a backpack-style carry bag, means you’re ready to hit the water with minimal extra purchases.
The drop-stitch floor is a great feature to see, promising rigidity and stability similar to a hard-shell kayak. At 37.5lbs, it’s lighter than many hard kayaks but still feels durable enough for frequent use. The sleek, touring-inspired shape hints at better tracking and speed than bulkier inflatables. We have heard some negative feedback about Aqua Marina’s customer service, however, so buyer beware if you need support.
Setup/Packdown
Setting up the Memba 390 is relatively quick, thanks to the high-pressure pump and three separate air chambers (main floor + two side tubes). The drop-stitch floor inflates stiff, eliminating the ‘taco effect’ common in cheaper inflatables. The self-bailing drain valves are a nice touch, allowing you to choose between open (for whitewater) or closed (flatwater) modes.
Packing down is straightforward and the backpack-style carry bag is a huge upgrade over awkward duffel-style bags. It does, however, require some forethought for its long-term storage situation. For example, keeping it partially inflated or loosely folded helps prevent seam stress. Also, the pump’s pressure gauge can be unreliable (stuck at 2 PSI), but experienced paddlers can eyeball the firmness.
Paddling Experience
On the water, the Memba 390 does great as a touring kayak. The 12’10” length and low rocker hull help it track straight with minimal effort and the twin fins further improve directional stability (just don’t forget to install both!). The drop-stitch floor adds confidence, allowing you to stand up or shift positions without wobbling.
For a tandem kayak, it’s surprisingly efficient, with good speed on calm lakes and mild rivers. The high-back seats are comfortable for long trips and the cargo bungees provide decent storage for light gear. It’s not a whitewater kayak, however, as while it handles small rapids, the high sides make it less stable in choppy conditions.
Final Verdict
The Aqua Marina Memba 390 2P is a great mid-range inflatable for recreational touring and family paddling. Its drop-stitch floor, efficient design and included accessories make it a strong value for beginners and casual adventurers.
